Winding road curving around a dark hill under clear skies.

Adverse childhood events may cause health issues in adulthood.

Adverse childhood events (ACEs) can shape a person’s health long into adulthood, and the connection is well‑documented. Experiences such as abuse, neglect, household instability, or chronic stress can influence how the brain and body develop, affecting emotional regulation, immune function, and long‑term physical health. Many adults who faced significant adversity early in life are more likely to experience challenges such as anxiety, depression, chronic illness, or difficulty managing stress. Understanding this link helps individuals, caregivers, hospices, and support organizations respond with compassion, stability, and trauma‑informed care that acknowledges the full story of a person’s life.
